The Must-Know Student Recruitment Trends in APAC for 2019 – Universum

Oleo and Universum’s The Must-Know Student Recruitment Trends in APAC for 2019 Report aims to trigger reflection on how to be more agile and responsive to the recruitment trends found. To conduct this study,  anonymous application data from 1.7 million graduates applying for graduate programs in finance and professional business services were analysed.

Some key findings from this report include:

  • The is an increase in the average number of applications for graduate programs in APAC. An average of 225,000 applications is expected for financial and professional services companies.
  • Approximately 30% of reviewed applications were not completed, which means that although there were more candidates applying, not all of them completed their applications.
  • Without any further reviews or interviews, about 50% of applicants were filtered out, which indicates that organisations set higher standards for pre-screening requirements to have a more agile selection.
  • 82% of APAC hires identified themselves as “Asian”, 16% did not disclose this information or selected “Other”. This means that regardless of a large number of international job seekers in APAC region, only 4% of them were hired.
  • “On-campus events/career fairs” and “Career websites and careers services” were ranked as the top sources to be informed about vacancies.
  • In Hong Kong, when asked what they want to do most after graduation, a majority of students said they wanted to work for an international organisation and almost half of the students in Singapore had the same goal.
  • “Professional training and development” and “A friendly work environment” were ranked as the top preferences in an attractive employer in both Hong Kong and Singapore.
  • All students in Hong Kong and Singapore rated “to have work/life balance” as their top career goal.
  • “Social media”, “Employer Websites” and “Career Fairs” were selected as the top communication channels for employers to approach graduating students in APAC. Among all social media platforms, Facebook and Instagram were the two platforms where employers were most active on to reach out to future candidates.
